I would like to talk to you about a term that you probably have heard before and never really thought about. The term is used incorrectly more times that it is used correctly. It is a title that many people give themselves but only a few deserve. The expression that I am talking about is fitness professional. You may be thinking to yourself, “Well I know what a fitness professional is” and I do think that most of our members probably do know what the term actually means. Many people, however, only think they know what this title actually stands for. Unfortunately, even fewer people understand how important a fitness professional actually is for the club.
WHO ARE THE BEST THAI FITNESS TRAINERS IN BANKGOK AND PHUKET?
Let’s begin by talking about the top misconception people have about the trainers that work in their clubs. Many club members and unqualified trainers think that just because someone is fit and workout that they can be a trainer. This is very untrue. It is tantamount to saying if a person has nice teeth he must be a dentist. Personal trainers, like doctors, lawyers, engineers and other professions, must have specific training in their field of expertise. Fitness is no different. To be fitness professional, a person should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an area of fitness. Most of the accepted degrees will be in exercise science, exercise physiology, fitness and wellness or sports science. Along with the degree the trainer should also have a personal trainer certification from a reputable organization. Three of the highest regarded certifications come from The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and The American Council on Exercise (ACE). Fitness professionals also need to do many hours of continuing education every year to keep up to date on trends in their field.
PERSONAL TRAINERS ARE JUST EX PRO ATHLETES or FITNESS FANATICS AREN’T THEY?
So it must be easy to get all of these credentials right? People in the fitness business aren’t that smart; they are just glorified former athletes aren’t they? Many people have this mindset as well. The reason that this idea is so pervasive can be blamed on the fitness industry itself. Many larger fitness companies hire trainers who are not qualified. They do hire the former football player who looks the part of a trainer but in reality has no idea what he/she is doing. I have been to these clubs, all around the world, and believe me the clubs suffer. These unqualified instructors usually lack professionalism, perform the same “program” with every member, lack the ability to deal with contraindications and problems specific to each individual member and can actually injure guests with their lack of knowledge in key areas. Clubs will pass these people off as professionals, sometimes even lying about the credentials of their employees.
FIND HEALTH CLUBS & GYMS WITH QUALIFIED EXPERIENCED & TRAINED PERSONAL TRAINERS
So why do other clubs do this? The answer is greed. It is cheaper to hire people who have no idea what they are doing and pass them off as professionals. What can you as a member do to prevent this from happening? The first thing you should do is ask your trainer about their credentials. Most people take the word of the club that they belong to and just assume that everyone is qualified. Always ask a trainer why or what. Why are we doing this exercise? What muscle groups are we working? If the person you think is a professional cannot answer simple questions, you know something is wrong. Ask the Fitness Director for the qualifications of all of his trainers. You should even ask the Director his/her qualifications! If the staff are qualified fitness professionals, the Director will be proud to show you.
As the Fitness Director of the Cascade Club, I am very proud of my staff of fitness professionals. All of my staff, including myself, have the above credentials and more. I want our club to be the one by which all other clubs are measured. As a member of our club, you deserve nothing but the best. I challenge any other club to match our standards. You can trust that your club is second to none when it comes to fitness professionals.
You can also be proud that your reciprocal club in Phuket, RPM Health Club, also trains their personal trainers to the highest standards so that you are always surrounded by true fitness professionals.
