Coming Back from Hospitalization & Surgery
A lot of physiotherapy was put in place, especially to restore my right leg and right hand function. It was really hard and painful but I could never give up. I focused on what I had to withstand so that I could have the best chance to make it to the start line of the next big race my coaches and I wanted to focus on. An Ironman. In early August.
From the unfortunate incidence, only a few months ago, I was extremely pleased to get some of my fitness and strength back and race in the Ironman 70.3 Cebu, Philippines last weekend! Here is a recap of my experience during this race.
PS: I remind you that being healthy, fit and strong in Phuket is a blessing!
I successfully managed a 2.54hr bike split, which was my personal record for 90km bike leg of half-iron distance. I was really happy because I only got back on the road five weeks ago and have lost a lot of confidence after getting hit by the motorbike.
Going into the run I was just not as strong as my old self. This would be the longest run in six months! Running has always been my strongest leg, my weapon, but I won’t be able to rely on it today. It was extremely hot…boiling and I was suffering inside and out. I felt physically awful but worse mentally. I have to admit it was really hard to realize how much running fitness I have lost and see so many people passed by.
I wanted to stop at 11 km but I did not come 102km to give up or walk or slow down!! I knew it in my heart I must kept going. On the last 2 km, I caught a glimpse of another lady in front and I said to myself, “I will catch her regardless”. I had nothing left in the tank but I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and ran the hell out of my life (I actually almost passed out) as I overtook her in the last 600m and didn’t realised until the end of the race that that was the move that got me on the podium by 40 seconds!
I will be traveling quite a lot for the rest of the month as I will be heading down to Hua Hin triathlon next weekend and Austria for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship at the end of the month. Please wish me luck!!
